Charlotte Chadderton recently gave a presentation at the NICEC social justice network meeting arguing for the need to decolonise careers education. In it she asked participants at the network meeting to think about how career education reinforces colonial hierarchies and also to consider whether it could be used to challenge these inequalities more.

Really interesting presentation and very informative. I’m very interested in the concept of the ‘idealised’ white, middle class, resourceful client with plenty of belief in their own agency. There’s many additional perspectives we could use to enrich our work. I found Julian Baggini’s book ‘How The World Thinks’ very helpful in learning more about different approaches to subjectivity and agency. I’d also say that decolonising isn’t about silencing voices – it’s about adding and including and therefore doing a better job for everyone (especially our clients).
