What kind of researcher/academic do you want to be?

What kind of researcher do you want to be

This week we have been running ECADOC 6. This event brings together doctoral researchers from across Europe (and even the world) to share ideas, solidarity and learn from one another.

As part of the final day I’m running a career development activity asking them what kind of researcher or academic they want to be, both now and after they finish their PhDs. I have adapted a series of career development activities from The Precarious Workers’ Brigade’s Training for Exploitation.

We will spend the morning doing three activities.

  • Reflecting on values and aspirations using the What kind of researcher do you want to be target exercise.
  • Creating an ideal job description for the academic/research job that they would really want.
  • Creating an open letter discussing how they would like academic employers to change their employment practice.

These are the slides that I’m going to use to facilitate this session.

What kind of researcher do you want to be?

Like all the materials on this site it is free for people to use. If anyone else doing careers work with PhDs/doctoral researchers wants to talk to me about this – then feel free to get in touch.
