Social justice at work. On power relations, inclusion and recognition in the career guidance practice

In this presentation Åsa Sundelin (Senior lecturer at Department of Education at Stockholm University, program coordinator of the career counsellor education) discusses the issues of social justice and power in career guidance work with migrants.

In this lecture, which was originally recorded for the Career Guidance and Social Justice E-School in 2020, I explore how the experience of career guidance and counselling with clients from migrant backgrounds can contribute to the knowledge development of the field. In particular, I explore the idea of social justice in relation to interaction in career counselling conversations with young migrants..

This lecture addresses challenges and opportunities regarding social justice in career guidance practice drawn from the example of career conversations with migrants. Examples and conclusions for CGC practice are drawn from empirical studies of career conversations with migrants on two main themes:

  • Managing knowledge asymmetries
  • Managing discrimination and recognition
