Social justice and career guidance: The movie

Olga Pokrovskaya (Master student in Career Counselling and Guidance at the University of Iceland) an Anna Pallin (a career guidance counselor and Ph.D. Student at Umeå University, Sweden) recently created this film to explain what social justice is and how career guidance can contribute to it. They created the movie as part of the course Career Guidance and Social Justice organised by Norway Inland University of Applied Sciences in the fall of 2020.

This short movie represents hours of discussions on the topic of social justice in the career guidance field. The course revealed the importance of being aware of what brings injustice in the career guidance field as well as exploring how careers practitioners can contribute to social justice.

The more we talk about social justice, the more we see its complexity and recognise the challenges in achieving it. But thinking about social justice also gave us power in striving for a more just society and the ways to do so. Therefore, we finish our movie with a Mexican sentence: “¡Si Se Puede!”, which can be translated to “Yes, you can do it!”. With this sentence, we emphasise the importance of each practitioner in the achievement of more just career guidance practices and societies in general.

For both of us, these conversations were a reminder about what society we want to live in and what role career practitioners can play in the creation of it. So, we created this movie to start this virtual discussion with more practitioners to think about career guidance and social justice.

Hopefully, this movie will keep these conversations going, and together we can advocate for more social justice in this world 😊.
